Name the goal
“Save more” is hard to stick to. “$3,000 for a new laptop by June” is not. A clear name, amount and date turn saving into a plan.
Build an emergency pot first
Aim for three to six months of essential costs. This pot protects every other goal — when the unexpected happens, you won’t need to raid your holiday fund or borrow.
Automate the habit
Move money into savings on payday, before you have a chance to spend it. Even small amounts add up: $50 a week becomes $2,600 in a year.
- Pay yourself first
- Round up purchases into a pot
- Increase your amount each time you get a raise
Celebrate progress
Check your pots regularly and mark the milestones — 25%, 50%, 75%. Seeing progress keeps you motivated through to 100%.
